Lights Out by Briar Cryderman

Assignment: Imagine the power has just gone out in your area. Write a journal entry telling how you feel. What electrical items do you miss most?

January 16th, 2017.
“I thought I saw a puddy tat, I did, I did saw I put…” All the lights went black and the small, yellow bird never got to finish his sentence. It was 10:07 a.m. and I had just started watching my favorite cartoon, Bugs Bunny and Tweety show, when the power went out. When I looked outside, I saw a garbage truck that had crashed into the hydro poles. Oh man! Instead of playing my iPod and killing the battery, I decided to go outside to build a snowman.
12:34 p.m. - I've just come inside and because I cannot boil the kettle to make hot chocolate, I sit in front of a toasty, warm fire. At this time I miss our electric kettle and television. I am very bored, so I decide to complete a jigsaw puzzle that contains 1000 pieces.
1:45 p.m. - I have just finished the jigsaw puzzle and have decided to play a board game with my brother. It's called Monopoly.
3:30 p.m. - it's getting late now and my brother beat me at Monopoly. I've gotten hungry now, and I have decided to make myself some cheese melts. I am carrying my plate over to the microwave when I remember that it is runs on electricity! Darn! I'll just have to settle with cold crackers and cheese.
4:00 p.m. - I miss electricity! It runs a lot of appliances and light sources like the microwave, kettle, lamps, etc .  At least the day felt like we were on a camping trip!

Assignment: Imagine the power has gone out in your area. Write a journal entry telling how you feel. What electrical items do you miss most?
Friday, 9:00am
Well here we are, on Good Friday, home from school for four days and we get an ice storm! If it was a school day it would have been a no bus day for sure! Oh well. On top of that, there is so much ice on the trees and power lines that our power went out! Well I guess I'll go outside and play with my little sisters until the power comes back on.
Friday, 7:00pm
I've been doing things outside all day with my dad. Our power is still not on so we had to cook dinner on the wood stove. We had soup and hot dogs. It tasted really good. Tonight we are all going to sleep downstairs so we can be together around the wood stove. It's so dark that we have to use flashlights and flameless candles to get around. I hope the power will come on by morning.
Saturday, 8:00am
There is still no power at our house. I am worried that everything in the refrigerator will get warm and go bad. Mom says to keep the fridge door closed. I hope I don't forget that. I would really like to know what's going on around town and if the power company is going to fix things soon.
Saturday, 8:00pm
Now I am just getting bored. I feel like I have done everything that is fun to do when you have no power. I kind of wish I had the television to watch the news and the weather. I wonder if my friends have power or not. I don't have any WiFi to text them. Maybe tomorrow. My dad is trying to work on getting a power generator going.
Sunday, 9:00am
My mom is sure happy she doesn't have to cook Easter dinner today! We are going to my Grandma and Grandpa's house for dinner. We are bringing a change of clothes because they have power and that means hot water! I am looking forward to having a hot shower. We aren't going to stay overnight because my dad doesn't want to leave the farm and animals all night without fresh water. He has to get pails of water from the river for the animals because the well pump runs on electricity too.

Sunday, 8:00pm
So my dad got the generator up and running. We can power our wood stove, fridge and even our TV with it. We watched the news and saw that our area was going to be one of the last regions to get fixed.  I wish that we could have power as fast as those other people. We are all going to sleep downstairs again. Thank goodness it isn't too cold out and the wood stove is good enough for us. One funny thing is that dad has had to get pails of water from the river behind our house to fill up the toilets so we can flush them. Dad has had to work pretty hard during this power outage.
Monday, 7:00am
Today we woke up to the lights coming on because we left some of them on when the power went out! Thank goodness we can eat warm food cooked in the oven again! I am really glad to have our power  back. It was hard not having the electric things we use all the time. I learned we need to be prepared with flashlights, batteries, water and other stuff in case this happens again. But I really hope it doesn't!

Today we had Blair from InnPower visit our school to educate us about electricity! He warned the students about the dangers of electricity, told them how electricity travels and different types of electricity. Blair showed the students some experiments and below you can watch a video clip. When your child, friend, family member, etc. gets home, ask them questions about electricity. Everybody learned something today

Today Malik showed the class his S.O.L.E project. He made gluten-free brownies and on top he  put cookie dough and to  top it off a chocolate ganache. It was so good. YUM!!!! Here's the recipe to the dessert and Malik making them, in the video down below!

Space, the Final Frontier

Space travel is worth the risk because we have learned so much from space travel. From the origin of our galaxy to curing cancer, all types of cancer too!!! We have even learned that there are other habitable planets out there. Satellites give us internet and pretty much everything on a computer. Also, from space travel we have developed scratch proof glasses. So we have got a lot from space travel and I believe it is worth the risk.

One dark and stormy night, there was a cute little nerd,
who peered out her window and saw a girl who looked a lot like Alice from her favourite book Alice in Wonderland.
She decided to put on her coat and go outside to follow this strange site. Not wanting to lose sight of Alice, she didn't notice a biker about to run her over. After stumbling around, confused for a minute or two, the Little Nerd was able to eventually regained her composure.
Alice was ahead of her quite a bit by now so the Little Nerd had to hurry to catch up. Even though she was in a rush, she did stop and give money to the sad, pathetic looking homeless man at the side of the road.

As she continued to follow Alice, she noticed a Starbucks up ahead. Although her favorite drink in the world is a frappuccino she did not stop to order one. It is a good thing that she didn't stop otherwise she would have missed watching Alice fall down a hole.
Just as The Little Nerd was going to follow Alice down the hole, Kylo Ren jumped out blocking her way. The Little Nerd was so scared. She screamed out for help and, like a hero in the dark, an Archer came to her rescue.
Now that the way was clear for the Little Nerd to go down the hole, she jumped through it and started falling down. Actually realizing that she was in a very confusing sewer system, the Little Nerd felt quite scared. She was instantly reassured when she saw kind Little Bo Peep with both her sheep and a goat! Little Bo Peep explained that she has a Divergent with her to keep her safe from the Dragon.“ A dragon!” exclaimed the Little Nerd. At that exact moment the dragon popped out and started chasing the Little Nerd.

Little Bo Peep's goat.
Not to fear, a superhero jumped out right at that exact same moment and guided the Little Nerd safely to the Gypsy.

The Gypsy explained to the Little Nerd that she will remain safe as long as she avoids Harley Quinn, the evil Joker. It was explained to the Little Nerd that if she has a tube of toothpaste to squirt at the evil joker she will be safe because Harley Quinn is deathly afraid of toothpaste.

The Little Nerd was finally led to Mario and Luigi who capably bounced her up the sewer system and back to above ground. She ran quickly through the night back to her house where she finally felt safe again.

Last week in math, Mrs. Degeer's class used the Dash robots for a coding lesson. Each group had to pick a starting point in the class then each group had to pick a prime number that was taped to the floor.  They couldn't pick a prime number that another group chose. Mrs. Degeer had decided to put different obstacles such as pylons in front of the starting positions. After the groups had picked their prime number, they had to find a way to program the Dash robot to land on their prime number and avoid the composite numbers in their way! We saw great improvement in the students working together, in their coding ability and they had a lot of fun!
